Frequently Asked Questions

Company

Q. Who is Ortiva?

A. Ortiva Wireless is a privately held company based in La Jolla, California. The company enables mobile operators to reduce CAPEX and OPEX while enhancing the quality viewing experience for mobile subscribers.

Q. What does Ortiva do?

A. Ortiva Wireless offers the industry's most advanced commercial solutions for proactive management of mobile video, allowing service providers to dramatically improve control, quality, and efficiency of rich media content delivery. Ortiva's iVOG™ (internet Video Optimization Gateway) for open internet media and mVOG™ (mobile Video Optimization Gateway) for portal services extend service reach, increase network efficiency, and improve video coverage density for mobile operators, while dynamically shaping the content to give subscribers the smoothest video and clearest audio experience possible – regardless of fluctuating and hostile wireless network conditions.

Q. What is Ortiva‘s target market?

A. Ortiva targets carriers of all wireless networks (2G to 4G) that want to improve the level of quality, control and the efficient delivery of rich media content for mobile subscribers.

Q. Who is Ortiva‘s competition?

A. Ortiva‘s offerings compete against solutions for streaming mobile video, and complement solutions for broadcast mobile video. Ortiva‘s advanced solution is unlike all other mobile video delivery offerings. Simply stated, Ortiva has created a new category of streaming mobile video technology that allows mobile operators to proactively manage the delivery of content for improved network control and efficiency, while at the same time improving the viewing quality for mobile subscribers. While other vendors offer solutions for mobile video delivery, none of them enable this level of network management and control from Ortiva. Similarly, Ortiva leverages a network-optimization approach to improve mobile video delivery, while many other vendors follow a device-centric approach that focuses on each individual handset/player.

Q. How is Ortiva funded?

A. The company is privately funded by investors, including Comcast Interactive Capital (CIC), Artiman Ventures, Mission Ventures and Avalon Ventures. The company’s latest round (June 2007) was for $15 million, and since its inception, Ortiva has raised $30 million in total capital.

Q. Does Ortiva have any customers?

A. At this time, Ortiva is deploying with tier 1 Operators in both North American and Europe.

Market

Q. How large is the mobile video market?

A. According to Multimedia Intelligence, mobile video is expected to exceed $15 billion in worldwide revenue by 2012.

Q. What types of consumers are accessing mobile video content?

A. Nielsen reports that in the first quarter of 2007, eight million persons 12 and older viewed video on mobile phones.

Q. Ortiva offers a media streaming platform, as opposed to a broadcast product. What‘s the difference?

A. Mobile broadcast and streaming are complementary approaches to delivering content to users, each solving critical but different mobile content delivery issues. In a broadcast model, any subscriber can “tune in” to specific content at a scheduled time (i.e., standard TV). This model is known for relieving the scarcity of spectrum problem for carriers. DVB-H, which offers a set number of channels and limited content viewing options (such as a static TV viewing schedule), is an example of this model. In contrast, streaming mobile media is transmitted on demand to a single user and addresses scarcity of content; you can view any show or clip you want at any time you choose without waiting for files to download. The bottom line: both approaches serve a unique role in the larger mobile video ecosystem and carriers can use a combination of the two to meet customer needs.

Product

Q. How does Ortiva proactively shape content to each user?

A. The mVOG constantly monitors each mobile connection and continually adjusts the audio and video to account for fluctuating in-network conditions delivering the smoothest video and clearest audio for each unique subscriber. More specifically, the mVOG monitors available bandwidth, latency, and noise conditions on an individual subscriber connection. The product then adapts video parameters of the content to best fit the user‘s current network conditions. The result: better network control and efficiency for the operator, and a better viewing experience for the subscriber.

Q. How does Ortiva‘s solution benefit mobile operators?

A. For mobile operators, implementing Ortiva‘s solution means that video delivery is optimized not only for their particular network, but for each unique mobile connection. This results in:

  • Greater service availability Subscribers receive quality video over a broader coverage area despite the interference that defeats other delivery solutions
  • Increased network efficiency and scalability Each video stream is optimized for best efficiency (as opposed to a “one size fits all” approach)
  • Improved coverage density By shaping the video content, Ortiva provides greater coverage, and ensures video delivery even in highly congested urban areas so the carrier can support more subscribers in existing spectrum

Q. How does Ortiva‘s solution benefit ad supported business models?

A. Deployed on a carrier‘s network, marketers can leverage Ortiva‘s ad-insertion to increase the quality and effectiveness of campaigns. Ortiva enables marketers to deliver high quality, personalized advertising where it is most effective and least intrusive.

Q. Do you have to install hardware to leverage Ortiva technology?

A. Ortiva provides licensed software that runs in the core network of the mobile operator.

Q. Do users need to install a custom client on handheld devices?

A. Ortiva's solution is 100% clientless for smooth, no-hassle operation without any end-user interference.

Q. What wireless networks does mVOG™ support?

A. Ortiva's mVOG™ supports a broad range of wireless networks, including GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, 1xRTT, EV-DO, DORA, HSPA, WiMAX, and LTE.

Q. Does mVOG™ require a 3G or higher network?

A. No. Carriers can deliver an excellent video experience over 2.5G networks using Ortiva‘s media shaping technology. This is a distinct benefit over other delivery providers.

Q. How do Ortiva‘s solutions benefit 3G and 4G networks?

A. As “mobile” subscribers move they encounter fluctuating network conditions caused by interference, noise, cell handoffs, and differing subscriber densities. Even 4G connections constantly shift from peak throughput to minimal bandwidth and back. In short, it is impossible to predict wireless network bandwidth, and therefore video quality in advance. Ortiva‘s solution ensures that higher bandwidth 3G and 4G networks can offer higher quality video even without optimal network conditions.

Q. What happens when a user moves between a 3G network and a 2.5G network?

A. Ortiva seamlessly shapes content at the application layer to suit the user‘s current network conditions, and the transition between networks does not interrupt the video optimization .

Q. Does the mVOG™ support industry standards and common codecs?

A. Yes, the mVOG™ supports international standards and industry codecs, including MPEG4, H.263, H.264, and others.

Q. How is the mVOG™ priced?

A. The mVOG™ is licensed software available under a variety of licensing models. Pricing is based upon concurrent sessions and feature capability.
